Mariline Design

Marilyn Monroe’s skirt-blowing scene interpreted as a beautiful parasol. This design is the result of a Bruges collaboration between the umbrella factory Symo and designer Bieke Hoet.

While everyone else was waiting for the sun to finally come out after a long winter, Bieke Hoet went in search of a way to block that very same sunshine, all be it as stylishly and gracefully as possible. The result was the creation of the Mariline Parasol in collaboration with the Bruges umbrella factory, Symo. The parasol has slits that act as ventilators and create a play of light and shadow - the fluttering linen an evocative expression of a hot summer’s day.
The Bruges design agency Hoet has been an institution in the optics world for years. Accessories, mirrors and furnishings aimed at the optics sector are some of the eye-catchers on offer alongside Hoet’s eyewear collection. But the creative team like to take on new challenges and it was a rewarding experience for both parties, the designer and the umbrella-maker, to combine the skills of such apparently divergent sectors. To be continued...
